MEARS Workshop began as a way to switch off from a busy day job and make something tangible at the end of the day. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, fixing things, and learning new skills, and leather working naturally grew from that mindset.

 

Alongside this, I’ve spent over twenty years serving in the British Army. It’s a career built on structure, routine, and decisions often being made for you. There’s a lot of value in that, and it’s shaped who I am, but it also makes you appreciate the rare chance to build something of your own.

 

This workshop gives me that. It’s a space where I decide what to make, how to make it, and when it’s ready. That sense of ownership and independence is a big part of why this work matters to me.

I'm married and have three children, so most of this work happens in the gaps. Evenings, quieter moments (these are few and far between with three kids running around), and time carved out around family life. The workshop might be small, but it's part of a much bigger picture.

 

Every piece is made by me, one at a time, in my small workshop. I work with carefully chosen leather and keep the designs simple and practical. These are pieces meant to be worn, used, and lived with, not replaced every year.

 

I’m not interested in fast production or chasing trends. I’d rather make a small number of products properly, take my time, and stand behind everything that leaves the workshop. Most days this work fits around family life, strong coffee, and a workbench that’s rarely as tidy as I’d like.
